The phrase "talk nerdy to me" couldn't' be more true. Sure, there was a time in my life I might have thought the word 'nerd' was anything but cool (Steve Urkel comes to mind). But like all things, my views have changed. I can honestly say there isn't anything that turns me on more than when you talk Facts and Numbers to me. And if you can remember percentages in your argument, I may drool on you.
So when searching for information on cloth diapering's facts I found just that at Lil Helper. They are a cloth diapering company based just north of us, in Canada. They were just as anal as I was about the 'real numbers' taking into account even the cost of washing the diapers myself, using humor along with every last detail.
I'll give you an example from their website: Both these nerds also have a master's degree in aerospace, which they occasionally use to impress people.
Then like any good website, I was sucked in by their humor and spent half an hour giggling while reading poo / diaper related numbers. Of course you know where this is going - I now wanted to try their diapers.
The only thing holding me back from emailing them was they manufactured diapers in China.
Duh duh dun dudidly dun dun… dun.
It's not that I'm against Red China it's just that I'd prefer to support the little man by buying locally. But here's the thing folks (like me) tend to forget: You can't have it all (all the time).
The Lil Helper owners live and work in Canada, (obviously) they intially wanted to make the diapers in Canada and they did, their first few hundred diapers were made in Toronto. But the cost of production was just too high. They could not offer the same affordable quality they started with (and that mom's like me search for) while still maintaining affordable prices (another a reason I wanted to try them), and continuing their Baby Do Good sell 3/donate one mission. Where they donate one brand new cloth diaper to a family in need for every 3 diapers they sell.
So that brings me back to China and why I still support them, here's what they have to say on the matter:
“I went to China and stayed there for a month to find a workshop that will let me view its facilities to ascertain that my products are being made in a healthy environment. After vetting 6 workshops, we finally arrived to the workshop that is currently fulfilling our orders. That was last October; it took us a year for them to get the materials, workmanship and quality up to a high standard where we would be comfortable to put our name against it. Every step of the way we also sampled the products on my daughter and a bunch of other CD babes, incorporating their suggestions into our design.”
At the end of the day, we believe that there is a right way of doing business with China and then there is the fast and easy way. The right way is to go vet several workshops and be comfortable with the way your products are being made- knowing well that my own daughter would be using the diaper along with every parents’ most prized possession."
Who couldn't love a company that's so honest and transparent?
So if you're guessing I reached out to them, you're right. Lucky for me (and you if you are cloth diapering), They reached their long Canadian arms right back. I'll be back ready to chat cloth diapers (again) with the low down on the first affordable organic diapers I've found since Chloe was born in August.
Would you prefer a video review over my usual chatty photo heavy reviews?

I vote video review… I don't think I've ever seen you do one? I always laugh at your accent (in a nice way) on the baby videos. The only thing that sucks about videos is EVERYONE know's I'm goofing off.
ReplyDelete(sigh)…. I remember what it was like to have a day job. Not to fear videos won't be a habit since I can't pick boogers, nurse a baby or stuff my face while I type. XO.
DeleteYour comment to Jones was the best part about this post… because I don't have kids. Yet I still read you because you make me spit coffee occasionally.
ReplyDeletePS: I had to spell check occasionally - I'm a tard.
